GPS
Maps & MapSource
Several Garmin maps have been available over the years; Roads & Recreation (R&R), Topo, City Select, City Nav, and newer Topos. R&R and old Topo were very good but have been discontinued, however, they were not copy protected so you can get a copy of a disc from anyone who has one or they can be found on E-bay very cheap. City Select is now obsolete. City Nav can be purchased on a disc or already downloaded to a data Card, however, since you want it on your PC and in your GPS, always buy the disc.
Installing R & R MapSource
Many Dual Sport riders prefer R&R for use in their GPS. If you can find a copy do not just stick it in your PC and install it, you will always have to have the disc to use it. To install R&R:
- Go to Explorer (not Internet Explorer) and create a new folder, you can title it Garmin or R and R.
- Copy the whole disc to the new folder.
- Remove the disc.
- Click on the “Setup” Application and follow instructions. This will install version MapSource 2.01 which is useless and the R & R maps.
- Go to http://gawisp.com/perry/mapsource/
- Go down to MapSource_6137.exe and click, then click run.
- You should now have MapSource 6.13.7 and be ready to work.
If you get another map set like Topo or even City Nav, just install it and all it will do is add map options.
Downloading Maps to 60/76
Open MapSource (Untitled), click on the widest tool in the header that says “Select Product” put the curser on it and select the first type of Map you want to download (like R & R). Now use the “Map Tool” which is the funny polygon Icon to select the sections of the map (counties) you want to download. R & R doesn’t have much data so there is no way to fill the Data Card so select every area you may ever want to ride like all of CA, AZ, & NV. Now select another map set if you have one and you want to download some of it to your GPS (like Topo). Again select the sections (quads) you want to download. Now save this file for future use and give it an appropriate name.
Now plug in your 60/76 to USB, click “Send to Device” Icon tool, Check Maps, click “Send” and wait. It may take several minutes. Take care to really pick all the map sections you want because you can’t just download a few more sections. Every time you download maps, it first erases existing maps and you must download everything you want.
Downloading Maps to 62/78
Unlike the 60/76 these maps go into 62/78 internal memory, you do not need a Data Card.
